Hot stone massage was originally used by Native Americans to treat aching muscles. A recent revival of hot stones in massage is credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona. She trademarked her style of hot stone massage, called LaStone Therapy, which has a Native American spiritual component and requires training and certification.

A hot stone massage takes a lot of skill and sensory acuity on the part of the therapist.

What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage?

Before you arrive, the stones are sanitized and heated to 120 – 150 degrees in water. The stones themselves are usually basalt, a black volcanic rock because they absorb and retain heat well. The stones are smoothed by natural forces in the river or sea.

Generally you will lay face down, and the therapist starts massaging your back. Using traditional Swedish massage the therapist warms up the body, then using the stone the masseur massages you. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another. stones of various shapes and sizes are used for different parts and muscles on your body.

Dealing With Back Pain

Back Pain and Remedial Massage

Not that far in the past doctors knew very little about the back and about the back pain symptoms suffered by millions around the world. There were no guarantees when going to the doctor because they always seemed to recommend invasive back fusion surgery or some other  techniques that weren’t really working. These surgeries and treatments seemed to leave patients worse off than before the operations. Many people suffering from these acute back pain symptoms gave up on traditional medicine and began looking for alternatives. Some of the alternatives that were considered “trendy” were acupuncture, Remedial Massage, holistic medicine, chiropractic and even faith healing.

Back pain symptoms can stem from many different back and spinal injuries but are usually related to some sort of trauma or trauma inducing activity, such as exercise or competitive sports. Many athletes have had their careers shortened by the excrutiating pain that is associated with herniated discs, the most common traumatic spinal cord injury. Herniated discs can cause severe back pain symptoms including sciatica which shoots pain down the legs and into the groin in extreme cases. Spinal pain and back injuries are all too common however and relief is too often found in pain killing medication rather than in treatment. The main problem with this approach is that most of the narcotic pain killers are also highly addictive and can cause problematic side effects for patients as well as lengthy withdrawal symptoms.

Chiropractic doctors and Remedial Massage Therapists continue to be the treatment of choice for many athletes and the beneficial effects of this type of treatment are now recognised by health funds. The injuries can take time to heal and need the correct attention and care.  Many Patients swear by Remedial Massge and claim to be pain free after several sessions, depending on the severity of the injury. Generally a good place to start curing or easing the pain is by the use of cold treatments that most sport physicians use. Icing the region to diminish inflammation and can help with painful contractions and spasms. Then your local Massage Therapist can manipulate and help release any trapped nerves or bundled muscles.

If you are one of the millions around the world with debilitating back pain symptoms you should definitely see your personal physician first before experimenting with any alternative medicine. This does not mean that you should not explore other avenues of treatment before submitting to invasive back surgeries. Surgery should be a last resort treatment, not the first option if at all possible. From experience and listening to many Patients Remedial Massage is a definite place to start before trying any invasive treatments. Please always check the credentials of your therapist before allowing them to manipulate any muscles.

How to Relieve Stress

Michelle at Central Coast Massage talks to me about how stress can have a number of adverse affects on your health, both short-term and long-term.  If you’re experiencing some of the following symptoms, it could indicate that you could benefit from some advice on how to relieve stress before your health suffers any worse than it already has.  Feelings of anger, fear or helplessness are common indicators of stress, as is insomnia.  Stress can cause headaches and pain in the jaw, neck and back.  Habitual smoking, drinking, overeating and drug abuse are also caused by stress.

Stress is how your body responds to change.  And situations that cause stress in one person may not cause stress in another.  It’s a very individual experience.  One person may become tense when driving over high bridges, while another may enjoy the view.  The thought of skydiving terrifies some people, but others find it thrilling.  It’s nearly impossible to classify any particular situation as stressful, because what causes stress in one person could be a source of enjoyment for the next.  The key is to identify and manage what is stressful for you personally, because letting stress go unmanaged can have life-threatening health consequences.

Things you feel that you have no control over can be upsetting.  But remember that it’s not the situation, but how you deal with it that’s important.  You can’t control everything that happens to you, but you can choose how you handle stressful situations.

Here are some tips for relieving your stress:

Focus on your breathing and breathe slow, deep and deliberately.  Picture a peaceful scene in your mind.

Exercise regularly.  Exercising releases tension from your body.  Find something you enjoy that gets the major muscle groups going.  Jogging, walking, swimming or bicycling are all excellent choices.

Count to ten slowly and deliberately.  This helps you to pause and relax before reacting to a stressful situation.

Do some stretching exercises several times during the day.  Stretching relaxes the muscles and reduces tension.

Have a friend massage the back of your neck, shoulders and upper back.  These muscles get especially tense when you are stressed.

Take hot showers and baths.

Listen to relaxing music.

Talk to your family and friends about what is causing you stress.

Seek help when you need it.  If you have recurring headaches and neck or upper back pain, and are having problems sleeping, you should see your doctor.

Learning how to relieve stress, and putting these methods to use are critical your overall health and happiness.  Try to learn to accept what you can’t change.  Not everything is going to happen the way you want it to.  Train yourself to look for the good in what appears to be a bad situation, talk to others about your troubles, and try to mentally remove yourself from the situation then evaluate it from the outside looking in.
